Svetla BankovaFlax Seed Oil for Thyroid Eye Disease/ Graves’ Eye Disease

by Svetla Bankova

When I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease, my left eye was already protruded; it was swelling and painful. My biggest concern was not only how I could get rid of the pain, but would my eyes be the same after the disease had been treated. Some Graves’ disease patients like me suffer from Graves’ Ophthalmopathy, sometimes called Thyroid Eye Disease or TED.

flax seedsOne of things I used to improve my condition was Flax Seed Oil. I am still taking that because it is so good for many other things. So let me tell you more about that.

Recently, I’ve been doing a lot of research and reading up on flaxseed oil and its many health benefits. All the health benefits of flax seed oil had me convinced pretty quick, and I had bought myself a 6 months supply of flax seed supplement in no time, and I’ve been taking them every morning since then.

Flaxseed oil is the most abundant plant source of omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid omega-3. The seeds and oil of the flax plant contain substances which are known to promote good health. We used to have enough in our diet in the past, from the products that were produced, but with all the GMO and chemicals that substance is actually missing now.

Flaxseed and flaxseed oil are rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid that appears to be beneficial for a lot of diseases. ALA belongs to a group of substances called omega-3 fatty acids.

Flax seed oil is good for: Circulatory System, Immune System, Reproductive System, Nervous System, and not only. It happens to be good for Thyroid Eye Disease as well.

Flax seed oil and Thyroid Eye Disease

There are a lot of reports that it can help your Thyroid Eye Disease and practically you can see results in 1 or 2 weeks. The recommended dose is 2 capsules of 1000 mg per day (at least). You can find Flax seed oil  in any GNC or Natural Store in the form of capsules, or you can also add flax seeds to your salad and just sprinkle them. I would suggest that you buy the organic, as we don’t know what kind of seeds are used in the regular. Also, if you decide to buy that in liquid form, make sure that you keep the opened bottle all the time in the refrigerator, as Flax seed oil is light and temperature sensitive.

Research has shown that majority of diets are deficient in Omega 3  essential fatty acids, and this can lead to some serious health problems. This is what else you can help by taking Flax Seed Oil:

1.Coronary heart disease – Omega 3 helps reduce cholesterol, blood pressure, plaque formation, and cardian arrhythmia.

2. Arthritis – Studies have found that oils rich in Omega 3 (like flax seed oil) patients can reduce their drug use.

3. Cancer – Omega 3 has been found to kill certain cancer cells without harming normal cells.

4. Skin problems like acne, eczema, and psoriasis are shown partly to be related to Omega 3 deficiency.

5.Omega 3 EFA helps improve your response to stress.

6. It is also often prescribed to some patients suffering depression, as it was found by scientists that people in depression are severely lacking this substance.

You can buy also Flax Seeds and use them for salads, dressings and however you prefer. Have in mind that when grinding them their concentration is much lower, compared to the capsules.

Properly prepared and protected, milled flax can be eaten raw, blended into drinks, sprinkled on ice cream or cooked and baked into items without losing much of it’s nutritional value.
